POD: First Water Fountain of the Year - The Benefits and Challenges of This Novel Invention



This is not good news for the health or the hydration of the general public. If water is not easily available kids and adults are often turning to bottled sugary drinks, like soda and juices that are supplied in school and office vending machines. Even if you bring your own water wherever you go, you could end up spending more $$ on refills to just keep hydrated. Not to mention, the lack of public drinking fountains has detrimental environmental effects due to the number of plastic water bottles being consumed. At GOpure, we understand the importance of a happy, healthy, and hydrated society. But our distrust of public drinking fountains is making a sizable negative impact on that mission.

The water in drinking fountains goes through the same cleaning process as the tap water that comes out of sinks at your school and home. However, the pipes that the water runs through will also affect the quality of the water. How old are they? Are they well maintained? Debris from pipes can contaminate the water and end up in your water bottle.


Public schools in Detroit, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois have even gone as far as to turn off drinking fountains because the water is too contaminated with lead, copper, and other common contaminants. In children, exposure to even low levels of lead has been linked to lower IQ, hyperactivity, learning disabilities, stunted growth, impaired hearing, and anemia. Copper is a mineral that is useful for bodily functions, but can be dangerous when ingested in large amounts. Symptoms of copper overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and anemia.


Many studies in daycare centers have found that water fountains are common carriers of rotavirus, which is known to cause diarrhea. Researchers have also found that handles on drinking fountains were the most contaminated surfaces in public schools. These bubblers are hosts for norovirus and influenza A. The norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu, causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Influenza A can cause high fever, sore throat, chills, and a whole host of other symptoms that can even lead to hospitalization.


There are some ways that you can help yourself and your child drink safely from a fountain. First and foremost, make sure to wash your hands after using the fountain. Second, if you are going to drink right from the spout make sure to let the water run for a few seconds and do not touch your mouth to the surface! But if possible, use a refillable water bottle and do not let the mouth of the bottle tough the surface of the fountain when filling. My family loves the idea of this and we have been trialing it out over the summer. We take it when we are out and might collect public tap water from a fountain, as well as when we go car camping to replace larger filtration gear for tap water at campgrounds. We have only used our filter occasionally and have not come even close to 2,000 H2O water bottles. While water does taste better using the filter than not, there is still a distinct chlorine taste to it, especially once the water has warmed up to room temperature (chlorine taste is masked whenever water is cold). I conclude that the filter does not eliminate chlorine entirely as it claims. And without lab access, I have no idea whether it eliminates any of the other contaminants listed. It seems like a great claim for a little device when public water systems typically use heavy machinery for filtration. Maybe this little pod is just too good to be true


As one early visitor described the Mammoth Hot Springs, "No human architect ever designed such intricate fountains as these. The water trickles over the edges from one to another, blending them together with the effect of a frozen waterfall." The hot springs were an early commercialized attraction for those seeking relief from ailments in the mineral waters. Today, to preserve these unique and fragile features, soaking in the hot springs is prohibitted.


The vents within these massive cones are often very narrow, causing the water to splash and spray as it emerges. Every splash and each eruption adds its own increment of silica, enlarging the cones as the years pass. The cones of many of Yellowstone's geysers are hundreds of years old.


Fountain geysers, such as Great Fountain Gesyer in the Lower Geyser Basin, shoot water in various directions, typically from a pool. A fountain-type geyser has a large opening at the surface that usually fills with water before or during an eruption. Steam bubbles rising through the pool during the eruption cause separate bursts of water that generally spray out in all directions. Fountain type geysers are the most common type of geyser and can range in size from very small to very large.


Additionally, you'll also want to bring three Rock Slime plorts along with you. These will be used to activate the easternmost fountain. Rock Slimes are very common, so you should have little trouble farming the plorts. If push comes to shove, you can find Rock Slimes in the Ancient Ruins before you teleport to the Glass Desert for the first time.


An Oasis requires a special type of water to regrow. To access Ancient Water, you'll need to get the Glass Desert's fountains flowing. There are four fountains in the area, each with three slime statues nearby. Offering plorts of the correct slime type to all three statues will activate the fountain. Note that all but one of the required plorts are harvested from slimes exclusive to the Glass Desert, so you'll need to restore the Oases in a specific order to get the best results.


Once a fountain is flowing, you can vacuum up its water if you have the Water Tank upgrade. Doing so will fill your tank with Ancient Water, causing your tank meter to flash in rainbow colors. Ancient Water functions identically to normal water, with two key differences; firstly, it destroys a Tarr on contact, even at night. Secondly, dousing a flower bud in Ancient Water causes it to grow into an Oasis. Ancient Water loses its magical properties thirty seconds after being gathered into your tank, so you'll need to act fast to restore your target Oasis.


Once all three statues are activated, head down the ramp near the first statue to find the fountain and gather your first batch of Ancient Water. You can potentially water several Oases with a single batch of Ancient Water, but you can also take it slow and do them one at a time.


A musical fountain, also known as a fairy fountain, prismatic fountain or dancing fountain, is a type of choreographed fountain that creates aesthetic designs as a form of entertainment. The displays are commonly synchronised to music and also feature lighting effects that are refracted and reflected by the moving water. Contemporary multimedia fountains can include lasers, video projection and three-dimensional imagery.


All of Darlington's fountains required an operator to change the water effects and lighting and were likely used in conjunction with music played by a band or orchestra for special events. It is unknown if the fountain was operated in a static mode when there were no performances or if it was shut off.


In 1915, the new greenhouses and conservatory were built in Garfield Park, Indianapolis. The dedication of the Sunken Garden took place on October 29, 1916. In 1916, Darlington was hired to design and build the fountains at the east end of the Sunken Garden. The fountains were the first in the country to be equipped with the mechanics that allowed the changing of the spray and displayed lights according to the season and holiday. For Memorial Day, the fountain's lights were alight with red, white, and blue, and on other days, gold and white. The fountains are still an attraction for visitors. The fountain was restored by The Fountain People in 1997 and with a musical control system by Atlantic Fountains in 2003.


An early example of a musical fountain choreographed live was the Pool of Industry at the 1939 New York World's Fair, where three operators controlled the fountain, guided by a paper program that unscrolled under a glass window like the paper roll of a player piano. However, rather than controlling the effects directly like a piano roll, it was marked with commands that told the operators when to push the buttons and throw the switches. The fountain was more than just water and lights. Besides 3 million watts of lights and a gigantic pool containing 1,400 water nozzles, there were over 400 gas jets with a mechanism that caused colored flames and fireworks were shot from over 350 launchers, creating a nighttime spectacle on a grand scale. Music was played live by the fair's band and broadcast by large speakers to the areas surrounding the display. The updated show displayed at the same fairgrounds in 1964 lacked the colored flames but used punched cards for the choreography, had prerecorded music, and utilized the then-revolutionary system of dichroic light filtering (developed by Bausch and Lomb for the fountain) which now allowed a dark colored lens and a light colored lens to produce the same brightness of light. It was by this process that 700,000 watts of light produced over 3 megacandelas. This show also had single lights with multiple sliding color filters for mixing colors, and arrays of nozzles that could be adjusted, their direction changed by hydraulic or pneumatic actuators. 2ff7e9595c
